Deductions & credits

If  you are trying to enter a charitable contribution carry-over from a previous tax year, TurboTax asked you  "Let us know if any of these uncommon situations apply."  It then asks about 30% charities, and capital gains donations that are limited to 20% and 30%.of your adjusted gross income. It sounds like that is where you are in the TurboTax program.

If you are not sure about your donation, you can ask your charitable organization.

You can also click here for deductibility status codes for tax-exempt organizations. ‌It cross-references the type of organization with the applicable deductible limitations.

TurboTax asks this question because some kinds of donations have stricter income limits. ‌However, these are not common.

If you made donations to a 30% charity, a capital gain donation limited to 20% of your adjusted gross income, or a capital gain donation limited to 30% of your adjusted gross income you would select "Yes" to the question "Did you have any of these types of contributions that you were not able to deduct on your  return?". ‌

You can also click on "Learn More" next to each of these donation types and TurboTax will give you additional guidance regarding these charitable organizations.

It will look something like this:

Click here for Publication 526, which discusses the rules for charitable contributions.

You can return to TurboTax Community and provide more information about your question if you need additional help.
