Deductions & credits
The most common reason for getting this error in TurboTax is that you have entered the HSA contributions in the HSA section of your TurboTax program and these contributions were already picked up from your W-2 when you entered it.
You can revisit the HSA screens to make sure that this didn't happen.
To do this:
- Open your return in TurboTax.
- Go to the HSA section as follows:
- If you are using TurboTax Online/Mobile click on HSA.
- If you are using TurboTax Desktop, enter "HSA" in the search bar and select the Jump to link.
- Answer all of the questions until you get to the screen that says "Let's enter your HSA contribution"
- Note: Don't re-enter the amount already listed (from box 12 of your W-2) as this will incorrectly double your total contribution amount.
- Make sure you continue through all of the HSA screens and have answered all questions correctly.
- If you overfunded your HSA last year but withdrew the excess by the due date of your 2023 return, answer No to Did you overfund your HSA in 2023?
- Ensure that you have answered the question "Were you covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2024; "yes" if you were covered by an HDHP during at least one month during 2024.
