Deductions & credits
Hi! There are essentially 7 requirements that must be met in order to be eligible to claim the Child Tax Credit:
- Age: child must have been under age 17 at the end of the tax year
- Relationship: child must be your own child (including adopted child), stepchild, or foster child placed with you by a court/authorized agency, sibling, step sibling, and descendents of any of these people
- Support: the child cannot have provided more than half their own support during the year
- Dependency: you must claim the child as a dependent on your tax return
- Citizenship: the child must be a US citizen, US national, or US resident alien
- Residence: the child must have lived with your for more than half of the year (with certain exceptions)
- Family income: the Child Tax Credit is reduced if your modified adjusted gross income is above certain limits.
