Yes, you can amend your state tax return to include the U.S Armed Forces active duty pay subtraction.
General instructions on amending your state return can be found here. Once you start the process of amending your return, please follow the instructions as follows:
- First, please ensure you are listed as a member of the U.S Armed Forces under My Info.
- Click on My Info on the left side of the screen.
- Then, click Edit under your name.
- Check the necessary box on the following screen that indicates you are a member of the armed forces.
- Next, please review your W-2 to ensure it is listed as active military duty pay.
- Click on Federal on the left side of the screen.
- Click on Wages & Income.
- Click Edit next to your W-2.
- On the page, Let's check for uncommon situations, put a checkmark next to Active military duty.
- Click on State Taxes on the left side of the screen.
- Click on Prepare State.
- Click Edit next to Wisconsin.
- Click Edit next to Income.
- On the page, Here's the income that Wisconsin handles differently, scroll down to U.S Armed Forces Active Duty Pay. Click Edit.
- Enter your active duty pay on the following screen.
On Schedule AR, Explanation of Amended Return, you can put a checkmark next to Wisconsin modifications to federal income.
The line reference for Schedule SB would be Line 18.
Your reason for the amendment would be a simple statement on the reason for the amendment. For example - Amendment of tax return due to change in Line 18 of Schedule SB. The U.S Armed Forces active duty pay income subtraction was erroneously not inputted when previously filed.
