You can possibly receive up to $2000 in child tax credit per qualifying child.  However, if your tax liability (the income tax that you owe) is already very low or even $0, then the child tax credit is reduced.

 

At that point there is a credit called Additional Child Tax Credit that may kick in.  This credit is up to $1600 instead of $2000.  To claim this credit you must have at least $2500 in earned income.  The amount of credit up to the possible $1600 is based on your earned income amount.  So, if your earned income is low, the credit will be low as well.
