Deductions & credits
Amounts paid to medical professionals (medical professional fees).
Qualified medical expenses include the cost of diagnosis or treatment to cure, improve, or prevent a physical or mental illness or defect. They include costs such as:
- Payments to or payments for services to doctors or dentists
- Hospital fees
- Prescription medications
- Medical equipment and supplies
- Miles driven with your car for medical purposes
Qualified medical expenses do not need to be incurred in the current year. For example, if you got a root canal at the end of December but didn't pay for it until January of the current tax year, that root canal is a qualified medical expense for the current year.
Qualified medical expenses don't include expenses related to improving general health, including:
- Vitamins
- Nonprescription drugs
- Cosmetic surgery (some exceptions apply)
