Deductions & credits
You may wish to return to your entries for Form 1098 and confirm that in the refinance section you entered the amount of the mortgage balance that relates to your home and NOT the amount of cash you took out.
Also, you can trace back the amount on Schedule A using Forms Mode in TurboTax for Desktop.
- Open your return and click the Forms icon in the TurboTax header.
- In the list of Forms in My Return on the left, scroll down and look for Schedule A.
- Click the form name to open it in the large window.
- Scroll down to Line 8a and right-click on the amount in the box.
- Choose "Data Source." The popup provides the name of the form where this number came from as a hyperlink.
- Click the form name in the popup to open that form.
- Repeat as needed to see either where the original number was entered or how the amount on any form was calculated.
- Note that numbers in blue are manual entries; numbers in black are calculated by the program.
If you need to re-enter an amount, be sure the number is blue or green. Overriding a program calculation invalidates the TurboTax Accuracy Guarantee and the ability to e-file. - Click Step-by-Step in the header to return to the main screens.
