Deductions & credits

With the doctor's recommendation (or "letter of medical necessity"), the portion of the repairs that relate directly to the removal of mold are deductible as medical expenses.  Not deductible are some of the ancillary expenses such as repainting, replacing damaged surfaces, etc.

The initial inspection is likely also not deductible since the expenses are generally limited to those around the removal itself, and not much else.

Anything that added to the value of your home during the process should be adjusted by the amount of the increase in value, if applicable.

It may be a good idea for this year to consult with a local tax professional near you in order to determine which parts of your remediation are deductible and to what extent.
