Deductions & credits

The issue is caused by a number "sticking" in TurboTax. In an earlier pass through the HSA interview, you indicated that you would withdraw X amount of excess HSA contributions after Jan 1st but before April 15th - this number ends up in line B in the line 12 smart worksheet on the 8889.

However, on your last pass, you either indicated that you would not withdraw any excess or you changed your answers in the HSA interview so that there was no excess to withdraw - the problem is that your previous entry here "got stuck" and now Line B is large than Line A.

The solution to this stuck number is to do what I call an HSA reset. Please do the following:

***reset your HSA data***

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), then click on Tools, then in the center click on Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

Continue with your return.
