Deductions & credits

The IRS will match interest claimed as a deduction to interest received as income.

Whoever receives home mortgage interest payments are required to claim the interest income.

You do not need to report the social security numbers of your son and daughter-in-law.

The Taxpayer claiming interest PAID as a deduction will need the Social Security number of the recipient of the interest payments.

Neither of you need to issue a 1098-INT since none of you are in the business of facilitating home loans.
