To qualify for the Child and Dependent Care Credit, you must have paid expenses for the care of a qualifying person so you (and your spouse if Married Filing Jointly) can work or actively look for work. 

 

  • The qualifying person could be your child under 13 who's your dependent
  • Your spouse who lived with you for at least half of the year and is unable to care for themselves
  • Any dependent on your tax return that lived with you for at least half of the year and are unable to care for themselves.

Some of the other qualifiers are listed below:

  • You (and your spouse, if married) must have earned income
  • You must have paid the expenses to look for work (a full-time student or a parent who can't care for themselves is considered working)
  • You must file Married Filing Jointly if married
  • You must provide the information for your provider (name, address, Social Security Number, or Employer Identification Number.
