Deductions & credits

If your HSA contribution is done through work, whether from your funds, or your employer's, you don't get the HSA deduction on your tax return when you file.

When the HSA is done through work, your employer excludes it from your taxable wages, so you don't get to deduct it again.

If you made your HSA contribution directly and entered the amount in the HSA section, but it didn't show as a deduction, then you may not have completed the  HSA eligibility section.

This is how to review this section in TurboTax:

  1. Open you return and  select Federal.
  2. Select Deductions & Credits on the left.
  3. Scroll down the list to find Medical, expand the section.
  4. Click Start or Revisit to the right of HSA, MSA Contributions.
  5. Select the type of plan you have, click Continue.
  6. Continue through the screens until you get to, Was (name) covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2022?
  7. Select Yes, and Continue.
  8. On the next screen select the coverage type for each month.
  9. Click on Calculate Max Contribution Limit, then click Continue.
