Deductions & credits

If you are taking the Standard Deduction, medical expenses will not change your refund amount.
If you are taking the Itemized Deduction, only medical expenses that go above and beyond 7.5% of your adjusted gross income will be added to the deduction.
If your expenses seem to add up to more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income, try going through that section again and checking to be sure there are no unchecked boxes or amounts with odd characters.

Your adjusted gross income will show on line 11 of your Form 1040.
You can preview the information on your 1040 form by clicking on Tax Tools, on the left

  • Select Tools
  • Then select View Tax Summary, first on the list under Helpful Links.  This will show basic information about the return.
  • In the upper left-hand area, in the menu, click on Preview My 1040
  • This will show a picture of the information on the tax form and there is a vertical scroll bar on the right-hand side, to scroll down the return.
