Deductions & credits

zorailynj_, hi & yes I can tell you what happened. So I was audited by the irs. It was a dependent, ctc, & earned income credit audit. It was a mail in audit. I filed 1/24, got the audit letter in February. I mailed all the requested documents that were listed in the audit letter within a week of receiving the request (I scanned the documents in on the irs website, which was also on the audit letter). The audit took 7 months. I did win the audit & I received my full tax refund on August 1st, 2022… but I would like to notate that the irs was very behind last year & they were performing many audits. So I’m hoping that your suit will be processed much faster than mine was. My biggest suggestion is to send in as much documentation as possible. I sent in 300 pages from proof that my kids lived with me, birth certificates, school enrollment verification letter (I got these from the schools the kids went to), notarized letter of verifications from the dad, the baby sitter for the kids that were not enrolled in school for proof that my kids lived with me & I paid for their child care. I also wrote out a bunch of receipts for any expenses that I paid for, printed out bank statements for the entire year, I submitted my court / custody orders / agreements, as well as printed out all utility bill statements for the entire year, & mortgage / rent statements & receipts for proof of head of household & single solo parent / care taker that provided more than half of the costs to run / maintain the house hold. I also printed out my school college expenses & detailed receipts of classes, books, & fees I paid for when I was enrolled into school. The documentation is the most important part. If you can’t prove that the kids are yours, that your head of house hold & pay for more than half of the bills on your own & that the children lived with you for more than six months out of the year, then you might loose the audit. Your documentation is the key to winning this. Good luck, & I hope this helps!
p.s., I’m sorry that you got audited. It’s is quite literally one of the biggest pains in the ass. The situation is long, stressful, ridiculous, & uncalled for. But good luck & I hope you make it through unscathed.
