Casualty Loss
Here's a strange situation: In 2019 we had a hail storm. The insurance company inspected the roof and did not think the damage was sufficient to warrant replacement. Two years later I changed Homeowners insurance. In 2022 the roof stated leaking. I called my current insurance company and they said the problem was the result of hail damage but since the hail storm was prior to them carrying the policy, they would not be responsible. They said I would need to contact my prior insurance company. I did and they said the timeframe for filing a claim had long passed and they would not cover it. I ended up spending $12,000 out of pocket (in 2022) for a new roof. Can I claim this as a casulaty loss?? Thanks for any help.
