The Georgia Adoption Credit is a nonrefundable tax credit which is limited to your tax liability. This is nonrefundable tax credit which allows taxpayers to lower their tax liability to zero. You may be eligible to claim the adoption credit. Georgia HB 114 provides an income tax credit for the adoption of a qualified foster child on or after January 01, 2021 to be $6000. If the child was adopted before January 01, 2021, the amount of the credit is $2,000 per qualified foster child per taxable year, commencing with the year in which the adoption becomes final, and ending in the year in which the adopted child attains the age of eighteen.
To claim the Georgia Adoption Credit:
- Sign into your TurboTax account
- Select State taxes in the left-hand panel
- Select Prepare State
- Proceed with Start state taxes
- On the Status of your state returns click continue for the state of Georgia
- Continue answering the questions until you finish the Income
- The next screen will have “Take a look at Georgia credits”
- In the first section, select Adoption of a Foster Child Credit
- Check the correct box if the Adoption was finalized before January 01, 2021
Or finalized On or After January 01, 2021
- Enter the number of Adopted Foster Children
- Click continue and it will return to the “Take a look at Georgia credits”
- The amount of the Credit will show.
