The child tax credit was $3600 for children under 6 and $3000 for children between 6 and 17.  Last year, from July to December, half of that credit was sent to you in advance.  So if you had a kid under 6 you got $300 a month and over 6 you got $250 a month.  So you got half up front.  Then you were supposed to add up how much you got in advance and report it when you did your tax return.  If you reported the wrong amount that you got in advance then you created a discrepancy which will delay your return and reduce your refund.
