If you are filing Form 8862 because you received an IRS letter, you should send it to the address listed in the letter. 

 

If your return was rejected because you need to file Form 8862, you can add Form 8862 to your tax return and then e-file it. 

 

Here is how to add Form 8862 to your tax return. 

  1. Sign in to your account and open your return.
  2. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  3. Select Deductions and Credits toward the top left.
  4. Scroll down/ expand the list and look for You and Your Family.
  5. Find Earned Income Credit and click on Start or Update to the right. 
  6. On the screen titled, Looks like the Earned Income Credit may put more money in your pocket, click Continue.
  7. Continue until you get to the question Do any of these uncommon situations apply?
  8. Check the box that says, I/we got a letter/notice from the IRS telling me/us to fill out an 8862 form to claim the Earned Income Credit.
  9. Select Continue and then Done.
  10. On the Since you got an IRS notice, we need to check on a few things screen, select  No, none of these apply and I need to fill out the 8862 form.
  11. Select Continue.
  12. Answer the remaining questions.
  13. Once you complete the section, you can run the Federal Review and continue until your return is submitted again.
