Deductions & credits
FL: has no state income taxes so you will not have a FL state return filing.
For federal income taxes, however, the total amount of your registration fee is not deductible, just the portion that the state charged you for taxes based on the value of your vehicle. If you need help finding this on your bill, contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. (Usually the deductible tax would be the one based on the value of your car and may be titled excise or personal property tax).
Also, you will only get this deductible portion if you itemize your tax return. You report your itemized deductions on Schedule A. If you take the itemized deductions, you will not be able to take the standard deduction. You can't take both so the TurboTax program will choose the one that lowers your overall tax liability
To enter your car registration fees in TurboTax Online or Desktop, please follow these steps:
- Once you are in your tax return, click on the “Federal Taxes” tab ("Personal" tab in TurboTax Home & Business)
- Next click on “Deductions & Credits”
- Next click on "jump to full list" or “I’ll choose what I work on”
- Scroll down the screen until to come to the section “Cars and other things I own”
- Choose "show more", then car registration fees and follow the onscreen instructions
