Form 8889 HSA Deduction Limitation
I have an family HSA through my employer. I am over 55 years old so I qualify for the higher HSA contribution limit. I am NOT enrolled in Medicare A or B yet but am over 65. I am still covered under my employer plan. My older, non working wife is on Medicare part A only. My adult son who turned 26 in July 2021 was on my family coverage employer plan through July 2021 but is not my dependent from an income tax standpoint.
IRS instructions for Form 8889 page 4 show how it should be calculated for the contribution limit.
Jan - July I qualify for family deduction limits for my HSA - $8,200 (son and me + over 55)
From Aug-December I can only contribute to the HSA as an individual. - $4,600 (only me + over 55)
that makes my contribution limit $7,083.
Turbo tax will not permit me to override the schedule to show the above amounts. It gives me an error and says I can not do that. So how do I input the correct data into the system?
