Deductions & credits
Yes, this is the correct way to enter your charitable deductions. Entering your charitable deductions under Deductions and Credits and using standard deductions and then reporting the amount you are claiming of $600 will not create a double deduction. If you are using the standard deduction, TurboTax will not take more than the allowed $300 of charitable deductions for single or $600 charitable deductions of married filing joining.
If you would like to double-check to make sure this is correct follow these steps:
- Click on Tax Tools in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Click on Tools.
- Click on View My Tax Summary.
- Click on Preview my 1040 listed in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Scroll down to Line 12a shows the standard deduction and 12b shows the total charitable deductions you made and the amount you can deduct (either the $300 or $600) will appear in 12b and then 12c gives the net amount of your standard deduction.
