Yes, you will need to know the correct amount of German taxes paid to be able to claim the foreign tax credit. If you expect to get a refund of German taxes paid then it would be best to wait until you finished your German Tax return and received the refund.

 

You might want to file an extension. If you expect to owe a balance due then please make a payment with your extension. Please see How do I file an IRS extension (Form 4868) in TurboTax Online?

 

 

To file your 2021 return you will enter your foreign income by following these steps:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account 
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “foreign income”
  3. Click on “Jump to foreign income”
  4. Answer "Yes" to "Did You Make Any Money Outside the United States?" and follow the on-screen instructions.

 

To enter the foreign taxes paid:

  1. Search for "foreign tax credit" and select the Jump to link in the search results
  2. Answer "Yes" to "Did you pay foreign taxes in 2021 or have credits to use from a prior year?"
  3. Follow the instructions to get the credit or deduction
