Deductions & credits
It depends. First of all gas used for work is an employee expense that is no longer deductible on your federal return. However if you live in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania, you can deduct these on the state level. If you live in these states, go to:
- federal>deductions and credits
- employment expenses>Job Expenses for W-2 Income
- Just follow the prompts and answer the questions until you reach a screen that says Any Vehicle Expenses or Sales and then follow the prompts where it asks you for gas expense.
As far as your prescriptions, go to;
- Federal>deductions and credits
- Medical>Medical Expenses
- In this section, there is a prescription category to enter prescriptions.
Note: Under IRS statues, IRS will exclude medical expenses that are 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). So if your adjusted gross income is $20,000, the first $1500 dollars of your medical expenses are not deductible.
Also, medical expenses are an itemized expense. If you do not have enough deductions to itemized for the year and take the standard deduction instead, your prescriptions will not be deductible. I just wanted you to be aware of these facts in case if you enter these but do not see a difference in your return.
