Deductions & credits

If all the contributions you made are shown in box 12 of your W-2, they will be considered before-tax contributions, which means you will not get a deduction for contributing to a Health Savings Accounts (HSA). This also means you do not get a deduction for the medical expenses you paid using the HSA funds.

However, if you made after-tax contributions to an HSA, you can get a deduction that will show on line 25 of your 1040. You can enter after-tax contributions in TurboTax by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your return, and select "take me to my return"
  2. Select "Federal" on the navigation panel located on the left.
  3. Click on "Deductions and credits" on sub-tab located on the top of your screen.
  4. Scroll down to "all tax breaks" and click "show more" next to "Medical".
  5. Select "star or edit" next to "HSA, MSA contributions".
  6. Follow through the prompts, when you get to the screen that says Enter Your HSA Contributions, you can put additional contributions made after-tax from your own funds (take-home pay, savings, etc.) as All Other Contributions
  7. This page will automatically pull in your W-2 contributions from you and your employer that were pre-tax
  8. Complete the rest of the related interview questions
