Deductions & credits

Thank you for reaching out - I am happy to answer your question.

The advanced child tax credit is issued based on the prior year tax return.  Since your ex-spouse claimed your child last  year he was automatically enrolled to receive the advanced payment.

If you are claiming the child this year, your ex should unenroll from receiving the advanced payment - if he is not eligible to claim the child this year he will likely be required to repay the amount of the advanced tax credit payment he received.

The IRS as a site where you can see if you are enrolled to receive the credit and to unenroll (stop) receiving the advanced payment.  The site is expected to have new tools added so later this year you should be able to update your dependent information.

As the one claiming the child in 2021, you will be able to receive the full tax credit as part of your refund when you file  your 2021 tax return.
