I can always override the system, which is what I did last year. But after overriding, TurboTax doesn't let people e-file, so I then need to print off hundreds of pages of tax forms for lots of different states and mail them in. By doing that (1) TurboTax makes less money because I don't pay the e-file fees, (2) it's a ton more work for me, (3) my personal information is at risk traveling through the mail, (4) there's a higher likelihood of errors at the state level when processing the paper returns, and (5) it costs the states more money because they have to manually process the paper returns.
By fixing the code, it's a win-win for everyone.
