Deductions & credits

Is there another way around needing a credit card or loan history to verify my identity so I can open an irs account?  I really don't want to wait for the mail to receive information on what I owe the irs.

I'm 30 now, i would be 90 years old by the time it arrives in my physical mailbox. (Lol)

You didn't answer VolvoGirl's questions, so we don't really know any more than we did.

You wrote:  "Now that I am working full time for the very first time, they say I owe taxes, and won't tell me how much."

We don't know what that means.   We don't know "who" the "they" are and how "they" told you.   Are you saying that you owe the IRS for unpaid taxes for prior years?   How do you know that?  Did you get a letter from them?  If so, it should have the amount, contact info, etc.

In any case, here's what is required to open an IRS account.

As an option, to get an account transcript by mail, it can be ordered through their website tool online.  The statement there says "Transcripts arrive in 5 to 10 calendar days at the address we (the IRS) have on file for you."

Since we're not understanding your "taxes owed" issue here in this user community forum, you can phone the IRS, if you wish, for information and assistance with your issue.  I'll go ahead and leave steps below on how to get through their phone tree to reach a live IRS agent, but it won't be easy due to the staff shortages due to the Pandemic and all the questions they are receiving during tax season and new stimulus payments.

Or if there is a local IRS office in your town, you can use this tool to find out how to contact them.  If they can't help you on the phone, you may be able to make an appointment.  Look up your nearest local office here:

Or to phone the IRS for help, here's the info:

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.
