IRS FAQ referencing the first stimulus payment Was my first payment offset if my spouse or I owe past-due child support?
A2. Your first payment was offset if you owed past-due child support.
If your payment was offset to pay your spouse’s past-due child support, you don’t need to take any action to receive your portion of it.
Most payments that were offset for a spouse’s debt were reissued to the non-liable spouse by the end of November 2020.
The IRS is still working to issue to the non-liable spouse their portion of the payment. If you still have not received your portion of the payment, that was offset by your spouse’s past-due child support and you are ready to file a 2020 tax return, you should go ahead and file. You need to complete the RRC worksheet as though you received your portion of the joint payment, even though it was offset.
If you believe that you are due the first stimulus payment or the portion of your first stimulus payment that remains after being offset for a child support obligation, you may receive your payment in the form of a Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of your 2020 Federal tax return when you file.
TurboTax will compare your one or two stimulus payment amounts to the computations within TurboTax. The computations within TurboTax are based upon the information that you have entered into the tax software. If you are due an additional amount, it will be issued as a Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on line 30 of the 2020 1040 tax return.
If you have e-filed your 2020 Federal tax return and the tax return is accepted by the IRS, you will have to amend your 2020 Federal tax return and correct the entries and calculations to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit.
If you have e-filed your 2020 Federal tax return and the tax return is rejected by the IRS, you will have to correct the entries and calculations to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit as well as correct the entries that generated the rejection.
