Deductions & credits

You can deduct the equipment to the extent the amounts are:

  • Unreimbursed,
  • Directly connected with the services,
  • Expenses you had only because of the services you gave, and
  • Not personal, living, or family expenses.

You can deduct your mileage at the rate of 14 cents per mile or your actual gas and oil expenses directly related to the use of your car in giving services to a charitable organization. You can't deduct general repair and maintenance expenses, depreciation, registration fees, or the costs of tires or insurance.

Some states also give special tax breaks to volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel.  Please look for that as you complete your state income tax return.
