Deductions & credits
If you're talking about the CD/Download version, installed on your computer, you can enter your personal property taxes using the steps listed below.
Taxes on your car are considered personal property taxes -- not to be confused with property (or real estate) taxes). Make sure you enter them in the correct area of TurboTax.
Personal property taxes are entered on Schedule A as itemized deductions. To enter these items TurboTax, please follow these steps:
- Click on Federal > Deductions & Credits.
- Scroll to the Cars and Other Things You Own section and click on the Start/Update box next to Personal Property Taxes.
- Click the Yes box on the next screen, Did you pay personal property taxes in 2020?
- Enter the personal property tax on the next screen.
If you take the standard deduction instead of itemizing you will not receive a benefit from the entry.
