Deductions & credits

You'll typically receive a Form 1099-SA when you've used funds from your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Medical Savings Account (MSA) to pay for health care expenses.  You need to enter Form 1099-SA.

You don't need to enter Form 5498-SA.  It's sent to you for informational purposes only. 

To enter your 1099-SA,

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax
  2. Click the Search box at the top of the screen
  3. Enter 1099-sa
  4. Select Jump to 1099-sa.
  5. On the Tell us about the health-related accounts you had in 2020 screen, select the appropriate box(es) and Continue
  6. Answer Yes when asked if you used your HSA or MSA to pay for anything
  7. In Free Edition or TurboTax Live Basic, follow the onscreen instructions to upgrade to Deluxe.
  8. Enter the info from your 1099-SA
  9. When you get to Here's what we have so far, choose Add Another 1099-SA or Done, as appropriate.
