Deductions & credits

Have you already filed?   If you have not filed yet, you can still go in and update Line 30 to be 0 by entering the amount of your second payment that you received.   But, if you have already submitted your tax return and it has been accepted, you can't change it.   You may need to file an amendment later, after 03/25 (the 1040X will be ready then).

If you claimed the credit but received the stimulus payment after you filed, you may have to do an amendment.   If the IRS adjusts the payment, you won't have to do anything.   But if they don't and you receive the recovery rebate that you did not qualify for, it is only then that you will file the amendment.

You will need to amend if either of the following is true - but you are not going to know until your tax return has been processed.

  • You forgot to report income or claim dependents, deductions, or credits.
  • You accidentally claimed dependents, deductions, or credits (recovery rebate) you're not eligible for.
