Moving to a House with an Existing Solar Panel Array - Federal Tax Credits?
I moved into a house where the previous owner owned a solar panel array outright. It was purchased/installed in 2011 and paid in full. It was installed in the backyard (it's not on the roof of the house). The seller transferred ownership of the array to my name in November 2020 when we closed on the house. The only expense I have incurred has been the solar inspection the month prior. Can I write off that expense for the Federal Solar Tax Credit? Is there anything else I can writeoff for having solar panels owned, although I never incurred the cost of installing them? I have no other maintenance or expenses with the solar array in 2020, as the panels are working fine. I do sell electric back to the grid and I generate SRECs on the PJM GATS portal.
