Deductions & credits

I understand the bug.  The taxpayer raised the additional issue that they needed to fill out the program correctly in order to “generate paperwork“ needed to claim their child under their custody order. Since the taxpayer previously indicated that they have custody more than half the year, there is no paperwork to generate, even after the bug is fixed.  (And therefore, in fact, the taxpayers in this case could get the program to work by indicating that they are both biological parents, and it would not affect the outcome of their tax return in any

way. Naturally, I would never recommend knowingly using buggy software.  But if they have custody more than half the year, they don’t need to do anything related to the custody order or generate any additional forms or paperwork in order to claim their child as a dependent.)
