So let me get this right, because I'm clueless when it comes to all this. I'm amending my taxes because I accidentally clicked I can be claimed as a dependent when filing. After Amending that to I can't be claimed, I should've gotten only $112 Federal refund originally? So I owe Illinois $848?
Well, yes. That's what it's saying. But that doesn't seem right. It seems like you should be entitled to a larger refund when you can't be claimed, not a smaller refund. Something else must have changed, possibly by accident, but we can't tell what it is without seeing your original return. Can you post the two pages of the original IL-1040, with the personal information cut off, like you did with the IL-1040-X? But do not cut off lines B, C, and D at the top of page 1.
Is your filing status Single? Between the IL-1040 and the IL-1040-X, did anything change on lines 1 through 28? Did anything change on lines B, C, or D (C, D, or E on the IL-1040-X) besides the checkbox for whether you can be claimed as a dependent?
There's something else that doesn't look right. It doesn't explain the whole problem, but I want to try to understand everything that's going on. The amended return (line 33) says that the refund on your original return was $960. But it also says (on line 29) that you paid $12 with the original return or after filing. Why did you make a payment if you were getting a refund? Where did that $12 come from? Does your original IL-1040 have $960 on line 35? Did you receive that refund?
It's very late now. I'm an hour east of you. I'm going to sleep now. We'll continue this discussion tomorrow (Tuesday).
