Deductions & credits
Beginning in 2018, moving expenses are deductible only deductible in certain circumstance by military members. You cannot use the moving expenses to offset any income from the check received. However, if the money was a return of security deposit, it is not taxable. If the funds were a refund of unused rent, it is not taxable. "Unused rent" would be rent amounts paid in which you were asked to vacate the property before the term in which you had paid was complete.
Any other reimbursement would be included in other income and reported on line 8 of Schedule 1.
Follow these steps if you have a 1099-MISC:
- Under the Federal menu, click on Wages & Income
- Expand the menu for Other Common Income
- Click Start/Revisit next to Form 1099-MISC
- Enter the information as shown on your document
If you did not receive a 1099-MISC:
- Under the Federal menu, click on Wages & Income
- Expand the menu for Less Common Income
- Click Start/Revisit next to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
- Click Start/Revisit next to the first option, Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099
