You may want to review publication 502. There are a few circumstances where you can deduct medical expenses for someone who is not a tax dependent.  (Somewhat oversimplified, you can sometimes deduct expenses for an adult child or an adult parent as long as you pay more than half their support, even if they are disqualified from being a tax dependent for certain reasons.)
