Deductions & credits

If you itemize deductions, you may claim job-related expenses (such as tools) related to your W-2 income. These expenses are subject to the 2% rule, so they aren't fully deductible. Please see the FAQ below for more information about job expenses and the 2% rule.

To enter job-related expenses (for your work as an employee):

  • Open (continue) your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in, click Take me to my return, then click Pick up where I left off.)
  • Click My Account (top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type 2106.
  • In the results box, highlight 2106, then click GO.
  • You'll be prompted to Tell us about the occupation you have expenses for. Enter your occupation (for example, mechanic) then click Continue. (Click the 1st screenshot below to enlarge it for reference.)
  • Continue answering the questions in this section. (If something doesn't apply to your situation, you'll answer no and/or click Continue.)
  • When you are finished with this section, TurboTax will display the Job-Related Expenses Summary. (Click the 2nd screenshot below for reference.)

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.
