If your son itemized on his taxes last year, then the refund is taxable.
If your son is itemizing this year, he will want to claim the tax paid. Follow these steps:
- Return to the federal section
- Go to Deductions and Credits
- Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
- click on Show More
- Locate Income Taxes Paid, select Edit/Start
- About Income Taxes Paid, select yes
- Scroll to the bottom section Other Income Taxes Paid in 2019
- locate Balance due on your 2018 state taxes paid in 2019
- Start/Edit
- Enter the state and amount paid
- done
