You're welcome, but it sounds like you found a way around it on your own. It's good news that you got it done! If there were Deluxe folders left behind when you installed Home and Business, it's possible that downloaded CA state files were going to a residual state folder in the Deluxe directory instead of to a Home and Business state folder. You can't have two different editions of the same tax year installed at the same time, so like you said, some residual Deluxe folders could have well caused the problem.
In any case, for future reference there is a way to do a forceful uninstall that cleans everything up, but since you have already succeeded, it's a moot point. But if anyone needs it, here it is:
