Deductions & credits
if your income is low and you don't otherwise owe taxes, then the credit isn't worth anything. In otherwords, you can have zero taxes and expect the IRS to send you a $1,000 check for the two dependents.
1) how much tax was withheld on your pay checks, etc and what is your refund? if those two numbers are the same, you don't owe any tax and therefore don't get the benefit of the "other dependent credit".
is that the issue?
one other thing to consider.... do you have children that causes you to be Head of Household? the reason I ask is I do not think you could be HOH if it's your parents that are your only dependents. So TT wouldn't say you were HOH and then turn around and say your parents can't be your dependents - it's illogical. What is more logical is they are your dependents but your tax situation eliminates the $500 credits.
