Deductions & credits
The 1099-SA reports distributions from certain medical savings accounts, such as an HSA or MSA. Entering the information regarding your disbursements creates Form 8889 on your return, which is required by the IRS. If you did not use the distribution for qualified medical expenses, it becomes taxable income.
If you efiled, it is similar to dropping your return in a mailbox. You cannot retrieve or change it. If you have disbursements reported on your 1099-SA, you will need to file. Wait until you have received your refund. To amend, follow the steps below:
- Log into your TurboTax account
- Choose the tax year that you wish to amend
- Click Amend
- Make any necessary changes
Keep in mind that when you are amending, the refund tracker monitors the difference from your original filing to the amended return. It does not include any original refund or balance due. If you are claiming any previously unclaimed credits, you will see the difference as an additional refund amount.
The Form 1040X for amended returns is not yet available for tax year 2019. It is expected to become available on February 12, 2020.
