Deductions & credits
Volunteer mileage for service to a qualified charitable organization may be deducted at a rate of 14¢ per mile on Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. However, you will need to exceed the standard deduction for your filing status for this to be a tax benefit. TurboTax will automatically determine whether it is better for you to itemize or take the standard deduction.
To enter volunteer mileage expenses in TurboTax:
- Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in, click Take me to my return.)
- Click Tax Tools (lower left side of your screen).
- Select Tools.
- In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
- In the I'm looking for: box, type donations.
- In the results box, highlight donations, then click GO.
- You'll land on the Donations to Charity page. Click Yes.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. When you get to the Let's enter your donations one at a time screen, enter the name of the charitable organization, then click Add next to Mileage and travel expenses. (Click the 1st screenshot below for reference.)
- TurboTax prompts Enter your mileage and travel expenses for Your Charity. After How often you traveled, select Once or Multiple Times, then enter your mileage information. (Click the 2nd and 3rd screenshots below for reference.)
