Home office - replaced whole roof - how to properly deduct?
I have a home office and have replaced the roof to the entire house. It affects the entire house and not just the home office. I am trying to figure out how to report this in turbotax (mac client, not website). It says not to report it in the home office section, to list it as a depreciating asset. What's unclear is how to tell it to only deduct the "office" portion. See step #4.
Step 1: In the Home Office expenses section. Quoting from turbotax "More extensive work, such as remodeling or adding a new roof, should be added in the assets section as a home improvement and depreciated". So we know it is not this section.
Step 2: Describe this asset, choices:
1. Computers...
2. Tools, machinery, equipment, furniture
3. Realestate property
4. Intangables, other propery.
I'm going to guess #2 here?
Step 3: Tell us a little more:
1. Office furniture, fixtures, appliances
2. General purpose tools
3. Construction machinery
4. Trailers
Going to guess #1 here?
Step 4: Have you used this item 100% for this business
1. Yes
2. No. If no: Percentage of time used in this business.
I'm not sure what to pick here. I could pick no and put in a percentage based on the size of my office, 9% of the home.
