Deductions & credits

There is no way to tell before filing your tax return if your daughter is listed as a dependent on someone else's tax return.  If your daughter qualifies as your dependent, she should be included on your return.

Generally, she qualifies as your dependent if she is

  • Related to you; and
  • Lives with you more than half of the year; and
  • Received more than half of her support from you; and
  • Is under age 19, or under age 24 and a full-time student, or permanently and totally disabled.

There is an IRS tool available to help you determine if your daughter should be listed as a dependent on your tax return this year.  To use that tool, click on this link IRS Whom May I Claim as a Dependent Tool.

Once you are sure that your daughter qualifies as your dependent this year, you should include her on your return.  If you receive an error that someone else has already claimed her, you will not be able to e-File your return, but you can still print and mail it to the IRS to receive the proper credit.
