Deductions & credits
You can get a credit of up to 10% of the cost of your energy-efficient building property, with a dollar limit of $300.
Examples of energy-efficient building property include: electric heat pump water heater, central air conditioner, natural gas, propane, or oil water heater, or a stove that burns biomass fuel to heat your home or heat water. You may also include the amounts paid for the assembly, preparation and installation of these items.
To enter the information for the credit in TurboTax you will do the following:
- Log in to your TurboTax Online account, or open your return in TurboTax CD/Download
- Click to Continue your return/Take me to my return
- Click on Federal Taxes
- Click on Deductions & Credits
- Click on "Check for more tax breaks"
- Click on "Skip to all tax breaks"
- Find the section titled Your Home, click to Show More
- Find Home Energy Credits and click to Start or Edit/Revisit
- If the qualifying tankless water heater is electric, enter the information for your qualified electric heat pump in the box titled, "Energy-Efficient Building Property" if you click the Learn More link beside of it, you will see that it includes the electric water heater there.
- Or if the qualifying tankless water heater is powered by natural gas, propane, or oil, you will locate Furnaces and hot water boilers powered by natural gas, propane or oil and enter your amount there
