Can I claim a property tax payment applied on Dec 31, 2016 on my 2017 tax return?
Way back when, an accountant told me that I could only claim two property payment installments as deductions on my tax return, even if I actually paid three.
On December 31, 2016, I submitted my April 2017 property tax installment after business hours, thinking it would be applied and marked "paid" the first business day in January...no such luck. It was applied on December 31, 2016. Since I already paid two property tax installment payments in 2016, I didn't include the December 31 payment in with the 2016 tax deductions...figured I could apply it to 2017.
Well, once again, I paid both installments (December and April) 2017 / 2018 property tax installments in October 2017. (It was a delay in the online payment system...I thought it didn't go through, so I tried again...but then both payments went through the next day...go figure! Luckily I had the money in the account, but...lesson learned for 2018.)
Anyway, now I'm wondering if I can claim all 3 installments toward my property tax deductions for 2017: (1) the one paid on December 31, 2016 for the 2016/2017 tax year and (2 and 3) the two paid in October 2017 for the 2017/2018 tax year?
If I can only claim the two paid in October 2017, could I go back and amend the 2016 tax return to include the missing deduction paid on December 31, 2016? Or am I out of luck claiming that payment anywhere?
Thanks for any help or advice.
