State tax filing
Follow these instructions and understand why for the 2 wonky w2s:
- GA is your resident state and it pulls in all income and taxes it. Your w2 was used for your employer to tell each state how much you made there already along with telling the federal your total.
- Now it's your turn to tell them your side of the story.
- Return to the w2 area and input only the state amount received in that state.
- If same EIN, enter one w2 so federal is right
- state $30k GA
- add state line $20k CA
- delete GA state return
- Next you want to do the CA nonresident return to create a tax liability.
- Now do the GA return and get a credit for the tax paid to CA, whole income of $50k taxed with a credit.
As for the federal income, you said 50k federal to start and now you have 62k. Where did 12k come from? Spouse, another job or an extra W2 entry that needs to be deleted. Go check your w2's. You may have double your federal income and then subtracted your deduction to get the other number.
