State tax filing
You should enter the information into TurboTax exactly how it is reported on your W-2 forms.
Depending upon your residency, you may need to complete either a part-year resident return or nonresident return depending upon your specific situation. For example, if you were able to work in Maryland but did it from Missouri, you would file a nonresident Missouri return. If however, you lived in both states, you will need to file two part-year resident returns for each state.
Be sure to enter your information into TurboTax as follows to ensure both state returns are computed correctly.
In the "My Info" section of TurboTax, confirm that you have entered the correct state information:
- Click "Edit" to the right of your name
- Confirm your input under #2 "Tell us the state(s) you lived in." If you lived in 2 states, you will need to reflect that information here.
- Do the same for your spouse if you are married filing jointly.
- Go back to the personal information section, and verify the mailing address and "Other state income" section. Be sure to answer yes to the question asking "Did you make money in any other states?".
On the state section, be sure to prepare the return for the state you no longer live in or for the nonresident state first to ensure any out of state credits are calculated correctly. This will ensure you receive a credit for any income that could potentially have been taxed by the nonresident state.
