If you are getting this error message on your state return, please delete any information that may have transferred over from a previous year on your tax return.
- Open your return.
- Click on Tax Tools.
- Click on Tools.
- Click on Topic Search and search alimony.
- Click on alimony or spousal support paid.
- If you get to a summary page of alimony paid, use the trash can icon to delete the entry on the screen.
- If you do not get to a summary page of alimony page, answer No on the Did you pay alimony to a former spouse in 2020? screen and follow the onscreen instructions.
- This should eliminate the alimony error on your California return.
